Cheetah, Cougar, Lion, and Tiger - OH MY!

I've been playing over at _Kizoa _, making collages that show what a wonderful job illustrator Susan Detwiler did with the images of the big cats in Big Cat, Little Kitty.

I have taken a lot of photos of big cats over the years, so I was able to make collages using Susan's illustration combined with my photos of a particular type of cat.

Here we go... Enjoy!

This Reviewer "Gets It"!

I love it when a reviewer of one of my books zeros right in on the reason, purpose, and point behind the text I wrote for the book. This statement from one review of Big Cat, Little Kitty illustrates what I mean:
"If I were reading this to a child, the catchphrase used "I am (insert name of cat) and this is MY (insert territory)" begs to be hammed up. Kitties have a lot of attitude, and this book captures that."
That is exactly what I was hoping would happen when I wrote the parallel descriptions of each cat. It's all about the attitude (or cattitude)! Whereas another reviewer complained that the cats seemed "possessive" -- as if that was a problem -- the reviewer quoted above sees the fun and humor that can be mined from this text when it is read aloud.

I do know that others besides this reviewer "got it." One of my friends uses special voices and dramatic emphasis while reading the book to his little boy. Part of the fun is kind of knowing/expecting what's coming, yet seeing that same "cattitude" in different types of cats in different settings.

So, thank you, Mr. (or Ms.) Reviewer! You made my day!

Jaguar vs Caiman

In Big Cat, Little Kitty, a "young crocodile" is shown as potential prey for a black jaguar. Notice that this is a young crocodile.

No, a jaguar would probably not take on an adult croc! However, I did find this amazing video of a jaguar stalking and bringing down a caiman.

Lynx Duet

In Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, T.S. Eliot wrote:

"Jellicle Cats are merry and bright
And pleasant to hear when they caterwaul."

If you've ever heard a cat "caterwaul," you might argue with his choice of the word "pleasant." But just wait until you hear this lynx duet!

Show of Giant Cats in Kyiv?

When I saw this headline, I was stunned. Could there possibly be people bringing 200 lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars to some place called Kyiv's Ukrainian House?!?!?!

Well, no. As it turns out, the term "giant cats" refers to "mainly Maine Coon, Persian and British Shorthair breeds from Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Poland, Belarus and Romania." Phew! That's a relief!

These very large domestic breeds are remarkable to see and fun to watch. Read more about this cat show and find out which cat won the "biggest cat" prize at this link:

Big Cats in a Box

You may remember "_Sofie is the Cat in the Box_" from our last episode... er... my last post.

As it turns out, the folks at Big Cat Rescue did "the box thing" with a few felines of considerably larger size than Sofie, with amusing results! Just press "play"!

(Sofie made me do it!)
